Black Flag Resynced Human Shield: How to Counter Gunners Safely

The short answer

Use Human Shield when a Gunner is lining up a shot and a nearby enemy is within reach: grab that enemy at the right moment so they absorb the incoming fire. It is the intended counter to ranged pressure, especially when a Gunner is positioned above the fight and is difficult to reach while Edward is busy on the ground. Do not hunt for it in an empty courtyard; it needs both a shooter and a body in the right place.

Ubisoft calls Human Shield the perfect answer to ranged threats. The key detail is timing. A Gunner does not simply add another melee target. They create vertical pressure, forcing you to notice a shot while sword opponents occupy your immediate space. Human Shield turns that pressure back on the enemy side when the setup is available.

Why Gunners change a normal fight

Gunners are sharp-eyed enemies who position themselves high above the ground fight. That height is the problem: Edward may be engaged with several enemies below while the Gunner remains difficult to reach. A player who only watches the closest sword will keep getting punished by a threat just outside the usual combat frame.

The first adjustment is awareness. When a fight starts, identify whether there is high ground, a balcony, a roofline, or an elevated enemy. If there is, leave yourself a nearby ordinary opponent rather than instantly clearing every basic target. That may sound backwards, but Human Shield needs a grab target. A single living enemy can become more useful than a clean-looking floor when a Gunner is about to fire.

The Human Shield sequence

Ubisoft’s instruction is concise: grab a nearby enemy at the right moment as the Gunner lines up a shot, and use the shield to absorb that incoming fire. The practical sequence is therefore:

  1. Notice the Gunner before the shot becomes a surprise.
  2. Keep a nearby enemy available as a potential shield.
  3. Wait for the Gunner to commit to the line of fire.
  4. Grab the nearby enemy at that moment.
  5. Let the incoming shot hit the shield, then use the breathing room to reposition or resolve the Gunner.

The guide does not invent an on-screen prompt, exact distance, or frame-perfect input because Ubisoft has not published those details. The reliable lesson is spatial: do not stand alone under a Gunner’s lane of fire, and do not grab too early before the shot matters. The move is a response to a committed ranged attack.

When it is the best answer

Human Shield is strongest when all three conditions are true: a Gunner has a clean angle, a basic enemy is close, and Edward is tied up at ground level. It is less useful when there is no nearby opponent, when the Gunner is already reachable by a faster route, or when a different defensive tool solves the immediate danger more cleanly.

The table matters because Human Shield is not a universal survival button. It is a very good answer to one specific tactical question.

Preserve a shield target without losing control

The counterintuitive part is restraint. Against a Gunner, do not automatically chain-takedown every nearby basic soldier before reading the full encounter. Leave one close enough to grab, but do not let that choice trap Edward in a crowd. Keep the basic enemy in your orbit while you look for the Gunner’s shot.

This is where combat variety pays off. Ubisoft says enemies react to repetitive behavior, so rotating tools is useful anyway. Use basic attacks, positioning, vaults, or a parry to control the ground threat without instantly deleting every available shield. When the Gunner commits, turn the nearby enemy into cover. Then finish the fight on your terms instead of accepting a bullet because the last enemy happened to be twenty feet away.

Pair it with the rest of Edward’s kit

Human Shield has a clear place beside other tools. The Rope Dart is a ranged-attack counter: quick-use it on a ranged attacker to break their defense immediately and pull them into a Hidden Blade takedown or combo. Quick Shot breaks the guard of advanced archetypes. Gun Kata eliminates basic types and staggers advanced ones after pistol capacity reaches four shots.

The editorial recommendation is to use the smallest tool that fixes the threat. If a Gunner has a nearby hostage candidate, Human Shield costs no pistol ammunition and turns the moment in your favor. If the target is too far away, the Rope Dart may be better. If the entire fight is collapsing, Gun Kata may be the reset. This is more reliable than trying to force one clever move into a situation that no longer fits it.

Do not solve a stealth problem with a combat habit

Gunners are most dangerous after a quiet plan has already become loud. Before that happens, Observe mode can help tag enemies and objectives, while crouch-anywhere and darker conditions reduce how easily Edward is noticed. If the goal is to avoid the fight, use those tools first. Human Shield is excellent once combat is active; it is not a reason to deliberately trigger every rooftop guard.

When stealth has failed, though, do not freeze because the encounter changed categories. Resynced explicitly makes combat systems flexible. A Human Shield is an elegant emergency response because it buys a moment to move, not because it turns Edward into an invulnerable wall.

The verdict

Human Shield is one of the most satisfying anti-Gunner tools because it asks you to read the whole battlefield: elevation, nearby enemies, and the moment a shot becomes real. Keep a close target available, grab at the Gunner’s commitment, and use the saved damage to reclaim control. It is a small piece of combat design with a wonderfully pirate solution: make their aim somebody else’s problem.
