How to Recruit Crucial Officers for the Jackdaw in Black Flag Resynced

A bustling 18th-century pirate cove at dusk with sailing ships docked along a wooden pier and crew members working.

Beyond Wood and Metal: The Officers System

Unlike the 2013 original, where upgrading the Jackdaw was solely a matter of hoarding metal, wood, and reals, the remake introduces a personnel management layer. Upgrading your ship’s hull and guns handles raw durability and damage, but unlocking the true potential of your vessel requires the right crew members at the helm.

Naval Officers are named specialists scattered across the Caribbean. Each brings a specific passive buff or slot-based perk that changes how you approach naval combat. Recruiting these specialists bridges the gap between basic firepower and elite sailing.

How to Recruit Key Officers

Several early-to-mid game officers are essential to secure as soon as you gain freedom of the seas.

Tobias

As you progress, Tobias becomes available for recruitment. He is one of the earliest named officers you can enlist. Securing him provides early-game buffs to the Jackdaw’s secondary firing options and overall sailing efficiency. Keeping him on board is highly recommended for players looking to survive early skirmishes with Spanish escorts.

Lucy Baldwin

Lucy Baldwin is another highly efficient officer whose recruitment quest acts as a solid test of your maritime abilities. She offers specialized bonuses to the Jackdaw’s cannon reload times and maneuvering, making her a vital asset for general raiding.

The Shipwright

Perhaps the most notable addition to the roster is the dedicated Shipwright officer. In the remake, standard upgrades are not just bought at any generic harbor master. Instead, unlocking the Shipwright brings a resident specialist to your crew who facilitates deep ship customization. Working with the Shipwright is necessary to access advanced tiers of hull plating and mortar systems, especially when combined with the Great Inagua upgrades.
