Can You Play Black Flag Resynced Offline? One-Time Activation Explained

· Updated July 13, 2026

The Jackdaw sails through bright Caribbean water in an official Black Flag Resynced vista.

The short answer

Yes, you can play Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced offline after installation on PC. Ubisoft says the game needs a one-time online connection to install, then the full single-player game is playable offline. The sensible move is to install, launch once, confirm your save works, and only then take your machine offline for a trip, a bad connection, or a weekend away from the router.

Offline play is not the same thing as “never connect the game to the internet.” First installation still needs a connection, and online services such as storefront access or time-limited Hub content may need one later. The campaign itself is the part Ubisoft says works offline.

What one-time activation means in practice

For a new PC install, plan on being online for the initial installation and first successful launch. That gives the storefront and Ubisoft Connect the opportunity to verify the installation, create the local game data, and finish any first-run setup. Once that is done, Ubisoft says you can play the single-player game offline.

The key phrase is after installation. Downloading files is not a useful test on its own. A proper readiness check looks like this:

  1. Install the game to an SSD with at least the required free space.
  2. Start it while online and reach the title screen.
  3. Create or load a save, then enter gameplay for a minute or two.
  4. Exit cleanly so the save has a chance to write.
  5. Put the relevant launcher into its supported offline mode, if it offers one.
  6. Disconnect and launch the game again before relying on it away from home.

That last test is boring in exactly the useful way. Finding an account prompt while you are on a train is a worse version of testing it from your desk.

What still benefits from a connection

The game is a single-player action-adventure, but not every surrounding service is necessarily local. Ubisoft’s launch materials describe the Animus Hub, projects, weekly Anomalies, crossover projects, rewards, and the Exchange. Treat those as online-adjacent features unless the game itself confirms cached access. Likewise, store pages, code redemption, cloud synchronization, patch downloads, and live support notices obviously need connectivity.

That does not invalidate offline campaign support. It just means the clean promise is narrower and more useful: Edward’s main adventure remains playable once the installation is activated, while live services are the first things to check when you reconnect.

Before you travel: an offline checklist

Finish updates first

Install pending game, launcher, and operating-system updates before leaving a reliable connection. A launcher may decide to update itself before it starts the game, and that is not the moment to discover airport Wi-Fi has an opinion about large downloads.

Confirm storage and saves

Black Flag Resynced lists a 65 GB SSD requirement. Leave extra headroom beyond that figure for updates, temporary files, and save data. After your first launch, confirm that the save you expect is visible locally. If you use cloud saves, let the sync complete before switching to offline mode.

Use the store or launcher deliberately

Steam, Ubisoft Connect, and other storefronts have their own offline behavior. Turn on their supported offline mode while you are still connected rather than simply pulling the network cable and hoping the launcher infers your plan. If a launcher asks you to sign in again after an update, solve that while you still can.

Test the exact device you will use

Steam Deck is especially worth testing before travel. The game is Steam Deck Verified and Ubisoft provides handheld presets, but a desktop activation check does not prove the handheld’s local install is ready. Run the title once on the Deck itself, confirm controls and save data, then test its offline launch.

Common misunderstandings

“Offline means I never need internet.” Not quite. The one-time installation connection is explicit, and patches or live Hub features are separate from the campaign.

“My game launched once, so every launcher will work offline forever.” Launchers can require a fresh sign-in after updates, account changes, or local cache problems. Test before you travel.

“I need an always-online connection because the game has an Animus Hub.” Ubisoft’s PC feature list says the opposite for the core single-player game: install online once, then play offline.

“Offline mode fixes all launch problems.” It will not fix a corrupted install, missing language pack, or the PC cutscene issue linked to specific manually set Ultra High options. For those, see our PC known issues guide.

The practical recommendation

Do the five-minute test before you need it. Install the game, launch into the Caribbean, exit cleanly, enable launcher offline mode, disconnect, and launch it once more. If that works, you can treat the game as travel-ready. If it does not, reconnect and resolve the launcher state before assuming the campaign itself is online-only.

That is the distinction worth remembering: initial installation is connected; the single-player game is not.
