Black Flag Resynced Legendary Ships: Preparation Checklist Before You Fight
The short answer
Do not challenge a Legendary Ship as soon as you find one. They are high-difficulty endgame encounters built to test the Jackdaw’s upgrades and your command of every naval tool; return with a deliberately upgraded ship, a clear repair plan, and room to learn the encounter. The reward is unique Jackdaw cosmetics, not story progress, so there is no prize for losing early except a sharper appreciation for the sea.
Resynced has four named legendary encounters: El Impoluto, HMS Fearless and Royal Sovereign (the Twins), La Dama Negra, and HMS Prince. Ubisoft calls them self-contained challenges, stronger and tougher than their original versions, and says defeated ships eventually respawn. They are repeatable tests, but that does not make them casual errands.

What makes Legendary Ships different
An ordinary enemy ship is usually part of the resource loop: scan cargo, decide whether the materials are useful, then sink or board according to the next need. A Legendary Ship is a destination. Ubisoft describes these battles as the ultimate naval combat challenge and says each has a distinct vessel requiring tactics, skill, and planning.
That framing matters. Do not apply an ordinary target’s logic and expect the same outcome. You are not there to collect a convenient crate of wood; you are testing a finished or near-finished Jackdaw against a purpose-built boss encounter. If basic maneuvers, aiming, camera awareness, or defensive timing still feel improvised, keep progressing elsewhere first.
The preparation checklist
Before crossing into an encounter, check these five things:
- Ship upgrades: Ubisoft says upgrades are essential for surviving the most fearsome ships. Visit a Harbormaster and make sure the build has a role: more damage, stronger defense, or more weapon capacity are all explicit upgrade categories.
- Weapon familiarity: Resynced gives every Jackdaw weapon a swappable secondary firing mode. You should know what your available alternatives do before the fight begins, not while a legendary hull is filling the screen.
- A defensive answer: Lucy Baldwin’s Perfect Brace perk can almost completely negate incoming damage when timed correctly. It is a stronger preparation tool than another speculative damage upgrade for players still learning the fight.
- A reset route: Know where you will repair, restock, and lower Wanted after an attempt. Local Harbormasters handle upgrades, weapon restocking, and cargo trading.
- A clean objective: Go in to learn and win, not after a long uncontrolled spree of fights with Pirate Hunters already following you.
The editorial priority is defense and control before bragging rights. A hull that lets you survive an extra mistake teaches more than a glass cannon that turns the first bad angle into a reload.
Secondary fire modes are preparation, not decoration
The Jackdaw’s secondary modes are designed around situations. Bow Chaser double shot gives a powerful forward volley when chasing prey. Heated Shot strengthens a broadside volley when it connects. Shrapnel Barrels damage sails over a wide area and offer an escape option. Deadman’s Cohort turns the mortar into a manually directed rain of smaller Carcass bombs.
None of that is a universal “best legendary loadout.” The official material does not prescribe one, and pretending otherwise would be thin air dressed as expertise. The useful preparation is to acquire the modes available in your save and practice changing them while aiming. A player who recognizes a chasing angle, a broadside opportunity, or a need to create space is ready; a player waiting for a single magic button is not.
Read Jackdaw secondary firing modes before committing resources to weapon experiments. The point is to expand your decision set, not to turn every port visit into a shopping spree.
Officers and the long-game build
Legendary fights reward command of the full toolset, and officers make that toolset more forgiving or more forceful. Lucy Baldwin offers Perfect Brace. The Padre unlocks Ram Dash, an improved collision attack that Ubisoft moved earlier than its original Legendary Ship reward. Deadman Smith upgrades the mortar with Deadman’s Cohort.
That does not mean you must recruit every officer before trying a Legendary Ship. It means their quests create meaningful preparation milestones. If a legendary attempt reveals that you cannot stay alive through a pressure phase, Lucy is a sensible priority. If you are uncomfortable creating or exploiting close-range openings, the Padre’s Ram Dash is worth understanding. If area control is the gap, Deadman’s mortar option offers another tool. The Jackdaw officers guide explains the actual perks without pretending their order is universal.
Protect the attempt from the wider sea
Legendary Ships are enough fight on their own. Do not arrive with an inflated Naval Wanted level and a damaged Jackdaw because you treated the journey as a warm-up. Pirate Hunters get stronger as the Wanted level rises and can continue pursuing the ship. Either reduce notoriety through a boarding reward or visit a port Officer before the attempt.
Weather deserves the same respect. Resynced’s dynamic Atmos system gives storms real gameplay consequences, including waterspouts and lightning that can deal area damage in the water. You cannot make the Caribbean polite, but you can decline to stack environmental danger on top of a boss encounter when the route offers another choice. See dynamic weather and waterspouts for the sailing consequences.
What you get, and why retries are useful
Each victory awards exclusive cosmetic skins for the Jackdaw’s figurehead, hull, wheel, and sails. These are permanent proof-of-skill rewards, not a hidden mandatory gear gate. Ubisoft also says Legendary Ships respawn after defeat. That is important for two reasons: a successful clear does not erase the experience from the world, and a failed first attempt is information rather than a broken save.
Use the first attempt to observe. Which attacks force you out of position? Which weapon modes did you forget to use? Did the ship fail because of a damage shortfall, poor defense timing, a lack of repairs, or simply an impatient route? Solve the real failure before sailing back. Grinding unrelated resources is only preparation when it fixes the reason the fight went wrong.
The verdict
Legendary Ships are the naval exam, not the syllabus. Build the Jackdaw through normal progression, learn the secondary fire modes and officer perks you actually have, arrive repaired and free of pursuers, then treat each attempt as a specific tactical lesson. The cosmetics will still be there. The sea is not going anywhere, even when it very clearly wishes you would.
